There have been substantial increases in indicators of housing activity in recent years. The number of residential planning approvals increased from almost 1,556 in 2013 to 6,934 in 2017 and to over 12,500 in 2019 (Q4).

During the Great Recession and its aftermath, provision of social housing by Local Authorities (LA) and Approved Housing Bodies (AHB)[1] fell sharply. In 2007, the combined provision by LA’s and AHB’s was 8,763.

In recent decades, there has been a decrease in home ownership and a substantial increase in renting from a private landlord by those in the younger population age groups. A growing proportion of the younger population are also living at home with their parents.
